We love: Yvonne Vera

“I would like to be remembered as a writer who had no fear for words and who had an intense love for her nation.”
p13
“Time is as necessary for remembering as it is for forgetting. Even the smallest embrace of pain needs time larger than a pause; the greatest pause requires an eternity, the greatest hurt a lifetime. A lifetime is longer than eternity; an eternity can exist without human presence.”

Yvonne Vera (1964-2005) one of Zim’s most esteemed writers, nominated for the commonwealth writers prize 1994, and her book Butterfly Burning was chosen as one of the best 100 books of the 20th century in 2002 by the German Literature Prize.

“Art can make a difference because it pulls people up short. It says, don’t accept things at their face value; you don’t have to go along with any of this; you can think for yourself.”

HIFA Dreaming

So we couldn’t make it to HIFA (Harare International Festival of the Arts) this year, but we still can’t stop talking about how amazing this annual festival is, (one of the Highlights of being Zimbabwean in our opinion!) The theme for this year is Switch On, and we hear they are set to do just that with the ever popular musician JahPrayzah as opening act on one of the main stages. The theme simply their call for us all to “switch on the light in the darkness. Using the flash point of the arts to see our lives as Zimbabweans in a new way.”

The festival runs from the 29th to 5th of May, and will feature artists Freshly Ground and ToyaDeLazy as well, look out for more pics and news on this event!
